Every excavator owner eventually stands in the same spot: the dealer quotes a genuine part at a price that makes you wince, while an aftermarket supplier offers what looks like the same component for a fraction of it. One option promises certainty, the other promises savings — and the internet is full of confident advice from both camps.

The truth is that neither camp is wrong, because "OEM vs. aftermarket" is not actually one question. It is three questions wearing a single label: what exactly am I buying, what does this specific part have to do, and who is standing behind it? Get those three right and the price gap stops being a gamble. Get them wrong and the cheap part becomes the most expensive thing you bought all year.

First, Clear Up What the Words Mean

The terminology gets used loosely, which is where most bad decisions start.

  • OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). Genuine parts built to the machine manufacturer's specification and sold under their brand and part number. When people say "OEM," they usually mean this, sold through the dealer network.
  • OES / genuine. Component makers who supply parts that end up in the OEM box. The same factory, a different label and channel.
  • Aftermarket. Parts made by independent manufacturers to fit the same application. This is the widest category of all — it runs from factories that supply the OES lines on one shift, to unbranded workshops that reverse-engineer a casting by eye.
  • Remanufactured. Used cores brought back to specification: machined, re-sleeved, new wearing components, tested. Not the same thing as "used," and often not the same thing as "aftermarket" either.
  • Counterfeit. Parts carrying a brand name they have no right to. This is not aftermarket. It is fraud, and it is the real risk people are afraid of when they hesitate over a cheaper part.

The practical insight: the gap between a good aftermarket part and a genuine one is often small — materials, tolerances, and test discipline. The gap between either of those and a counterfeit is enormous. Most of the fear around aftermarket parts is really fear of counterfeits, and those are two very different purchasing decisions.

Where the Differences Actually Show Up

Two patterns fall out of that table. First, price tracks documentation more than it tracks capability — the cheapest parts are rarely cheaper to make, they are cheaper to certify and support. Second, the correct choice depends on what the part does, not on a blanket rule.

When Aftermarket Is a Smart Buy — and When It Isn't

Aftermarket makes excellent sense for:

  • Wear items consumed on a schedule. Filters, belts, hoses, seals, gaskets, brake and undercarriage consumables. Performance is well understood and the cost delta funds more frequent replacement.
  • Legacy machines where OEM supply has thinned. Older excavator models are exactly where independent manufacturers step in, because the original supply chain has moved on.
  • Non-structural, non-critical components. Cabin fittings, mirrors, lights, brackets, panels.
  • Fleet-standard parts you have already validated. Once a specific aftermarket part has proven itself across your machines, repeating that choice is just good procurement.

Think hard before going aftermarket on:

  • Fuel system components on electronic engines. Injectors, high-pressure pumps, and their control valves interact with the ECM. A part that fits but does not match the calibration will run — badly, and sometimes destructively.
  • Turbochargers. Boost, airflow mapping, and balancing are precision work; a mismatched or poorly balanced unit can take the engine with it.
  • Internal engine components in a rebuild. Pistons, liners, bearings, and crankshafts set the life expectancy of the whole rebuild. This is where documentation matters most.
  • Anything safety-related. Brakes, ROPS structures, lifting hardware.

The pattern is not "expensive parts are better." It is that tolerance-critical and system-integrated parts reward verified quality, while schedule-consumed wear parts reward value.

How to Tell a Serious Aftermarket Supplier From a Risky One

The parts themselves rarely tell you. The supplier does. A serious independent supplier will do the following without being pushed:

  1. Ask for your machine and engine serial number before quoting, not just the model name.
  2. Show material and specification data — alloy grades, hardness, coating, test standards.
  3. Provide a test record for anything with a moving or pressurised interface.
  4. State the warranty in writing, including what voids it.
  5. Be honest about what they do not stock, instead of substituting something close.
  6. Have a repeat customer base you can reason about — a machine owner who reorders is the strongest quality claim there is.

Conversely, run from suppliers who cannot say who makes the part, cannot document heat treatment, quote a single price for every possible variant of an engine family, or push you to decide today because "stock is low."

Counterfeit Parts: The Signs Owners Miss

A counterfeit is not always obvious. The packaging is where the deception is easiest and the part is where it is cheapest to hide.

  • Prices far below the market floor for that component — not 15% lower, but 60% lower.
  • Part numbers that exist but are applied to the wrong physical shape or connector count.
  • Brand marks that are laser-etched correctly but placed inconsistently, or packaging fonts that differ from the originals.
  • No traceable serial number, or a serial number that repeats across different purchases.
  • Sellers who cannot explain the supply chain at all, only the price.

If a part fails and it turns out to be counterfeit, there is no warranty conversation to have. That is the asymmetry that makes counterfeit avoidance worth paying for.

The Total Cost View That Settles Most Arguments

The purchase price is the smallest number in the equation. What actually decides the outcome is:

Part price + labour + downtime + risk of a second failure

A £90 aftermarket wear part that lasts 70% as long as the £140 genuine item is still the better buy, because labour to change it is unchanged and the wear part is not going to damage anything else. A £400 aftermarket injector that runs rough on a £120,000 excavator is not a saving at all — it is a deposit on a bigger repair, plus the days the machine spends down while someone works out what is wrong.

Judge the decision the way an accountant would, not the way a price list would.

A Practical Checklist Before You Order

  • Confirm the exact part number and variant against your engine or machine serial — not the model name alone.
  • Decide the part's criticality: wear item, or tolerance-critical system component?
  • Ask for material specs and, where relevant, a test record.
  • Get the warranty in writing, including the claim process.
  • Confirm what is included: seals, gaskets, hardware, calibration data.
  • Compare landed cost, not just unit price — freight, duty, and lead time all count.
  • For electronic components, verify ECM and injector variant compatibility before payment.
