Choosing an excavator engine by appearance alone is risky — and so is choosing by machine model alone. Many excavators on the second-hand market have already been re-engined once, sometimes twice. A 320D may carry a C7.1 that is not the original arrangement, and a Komatsu PC200-8 may have swapped an SAA6D107E-1 for an E-3. If you order an engine assembly using only the machine model, you are gambling with the most expensive component on the machine. This guide shows the safe identification path: serial number, nameplate, and prefix decoding.

Step 1: Find the Engine Nameplate

The engine nameplate is the single source of truth. Typical locations:

  • On the cylinder block, near the fuel injection pump or on the side rail
  • On the rocker cover or valve cover for some Japanese engines
  • Stamped directly into the block casting (a secondary check when the plate is missing)

Take a clear photo with your phone — no need for any special equipment. If the plate is painted over, gently clean the area with a cloth and solvent before photographing.

Step 2: Read the Three Critical Fields

A useful nameplate photo must capture three fields clearly:

  1. Engine model / arrangement — e.g. C7.1 ACERT, SAA6D107E-1, 6HK1-TC
  2. Serial number — the unique production identity of that engine
  3. Date of manufacture — helps narrow emission generation and parts revisions

Do not rely on memory or on a previous mechanic's notes. A photo is objective evidence and lets a supplier verify compatibility before anything is shipped.

Step 3: Decode the Serial Number Prefix

Engine serial numbers are structured, and the prefix is where the real information lives:

  • Caterpillar: C-series engines use a prefix plus a sequence (e.g. a C7.1 with prefix indicating arrangement and build site). The prefix determines which parts catalog applies, even for engines of the same model.
  • Komatsu: the engine code itself (SAA6D107E-1) plus a serial sequence identifies the exact generation. The emission suffix (-1/-2/-3) is the most critical part for ECU, injector, and harness matching.
  • Isuzu / Cummins / Deutz / Kubota: each has its own prefix logic, but the principle is identical — the prefix, not the model name alone, drives the parts application.

When you contact a supplier, provide both the full engine model code and the serial number. A good supplier will confirm the application against their reference data before quoting.

Step 4: Cross-Check with Part Numbers

Once the engine is identified, parts ordering becomes straightforward:

  • Fuel injectors and injection pumps are serial-number-specific on electronic engines
  • Cylinder head gaskets and pistons depend on bore and liner revisions
  • Turbochargers are matched to both engine model and power arrangement
  • The ECU must match the engine generation — a mismatched ECM is a common cause of "new engine, no start"

Provide the part number stamped on the old component whenever possible. Photos of the old part number beat any verbal description.
