S4K 3046 Engine Assemblies: Long Block or a Defined Complete Engine?

latest company news about S4K 3046 Engine Assemblies: Long Block or a Defined Complete Engine?
S4K 3046 Engine Assemblies: Long Block or a Defined Complete Engine?

"Complete engine" is a purchasing term, not an engineering one. On a 4-cylinder excavator engine, two suppliers can both quote a "complete assembly" and ship two different products — one with the flywheel housing, injection pump and starter, one without any of them. Before price can be compared, the component list has to be agreed.

There is a second issue specific to this engine class. S4K and 3046 are different engines that get grouped together in listings and in conversation, because they powered the same size of machine in different generations. The first job is to establish which one is in the machine.

Key Benefits

✅ S4K and Cat 3046T identified separately, by plate and by machine, before quoting

✅ Long block vs defined complete assembly compared on parts, workshop time and downtime

✅ Installation interfaces listed: flywheel housing, mounts, sump, cooling, intake and exhaust

✅ Electrical and control items checked against the machine, not the engine family

✅ Evidence requested per unit: identification photos, test record, included-items list

✅ Quotation checklist that removes the most common cause of wrong delivery

Step 1: Establish which engine the machine actually has

The S4K is a Mitsubishi four-cylinder industrial diesel: four-stroke, water-cooled, 102 mm bore × 130 mm stroke, turbocharged in the S4K-T form, which works out to approximately 4.25 litres. Assemblies under this designation are commonly offered for the earlier Caterpillar 110B, 120B and 312 class machines.

The 3046 is a Caterpillar 3000-series engine. Caterpillar's own specification for the 315C L lists the engine as the Cat 3046T with 110 hp (82 kW) flywheel power and an operating weight of 16,750 kg — a different engine family from the S4K, in a similar machine class.

Published displacement figures for the 3046 vary between sources, which is exactly why the plate, not the listing, decides. Read the engine plate, record the complete model suffix and serial number, and photograph the plate. Then photograph the machine data plate as well: the same engine designation can be built in more than one arrangement.

Step 2: Record the installed configuration, not just the model

An engine that fits a model family does not necessarily fit a particular machine. Before ordering, confirm and photograph:

  • Flywheel housing and output coupling — SAE size and bolt pattern
  • Engine mounts — position, height and isolator type
  • Sump — shape, depth and drain position, checked against frame clearance
  • Cooling connections — hose diameters, thermostat housing direction, fan and pulley arrangement
  • Air intake and exhaust — manifold outlet direction, turbo orientation
  • Electrical — starter position, alternator output, sensor and harness connectors
  • Governor and injection equipment — mechanical or electronic, and the rated speed
Step 3: Define what "long block" and "complete assembly" mean for this order

Terminology varies by supplier, so the quotation has to be itemised. Ask for a line-item list covering the block and head, injection pump and injectors, turbocharger, starter, alternator, flywheel housing, manifolds, cooling parts, sensors and control items — and mark each one as supplied, transferred from the old engine, or bought separately.

Option and inspection condition Parts cost Workshop time Delivery and downtime
Long block, with reusable accessories verified serviceable Lower component cost; gaskets and worn accessories added Transfer, inspection and setup of retained parts increase workshop hours Completion depends on both the core arriving and every transfer part being serviceable
Defined complete assembly, matched to the application Larger agreed package; compare item by item Less transfer work, but interface checks and commissioning remain Shipment size, handling and any missing interface affect the schedule
Repair the existing engine, within service limits Parts and machining supported by inspection Disassembly, measurement, repair and testing Compare workshop lead time against verified delivery and setup time

The rule that saves the most money: decide the option after inspection, not before. A long block is the right choice when the accessories are genuinely serviceable; it becomes the expensive choice when the starter, injection pump and turbo all need replacing anyway.

Step 4: Ask for evidence tied to the unit being offered

A photograph of an engine is not a test certificate. Ask what was tested, at what conditions, and with what recorded result — cold start behaviour, compression, oil pressure at operating temperature. Ask for identification photos of the actual unit, with the plate legible.

Emissions configuration is a separate question and must be verified for the destination market and for the actual arrangement being shipped, not for the engine family in general.

Step 5: What to send for an accurate quotation
  1. Engine plate photo, with the full model suffix and serial number legible
  2. Machine data plate and machine serial number
  3. Three installation views: flywheel housing side, manifold side, sump and mounts
  4. A list of accessories you intend to reuse, with their inspection status
  5. Destination country and the required supply scope
  6. Required delivery date, and whether a core return applies

Send those six items and the quotation can be compared line by line. Without them, a lower price usually means a shorter parts list.
