Excavator Hydraulic Pump Buying Guide: Models and Specs

The main hydraulic pump is the most expensive wear item on an excavator after the engine, and the one most often bought wrongly. The usual failure is not a bad supplier — it is ordering by model name alone. "K3V112" describes a family, not a part: displacement, mounting, shaft, rotation direction and regulator code all change within the same family, and the machine will only accept one combination.

This guide sets out the pump families you will meet most often, the specifications that actually decide fit, and how to read a model code before you send a purchase order.

Key Benefits

✅ Displacement, pressure, speed, torque and weight for the Kawasaki K3V and K5V families in one table

✅ A field-by-field breakdown of the pump model code, using a real ordering format

✅ The regulator codes explained — why two identical pumps behave completely differently

✅ The five specifications that decide whether a pump fits, and the three that are usually ignored

✅ Installation limits that determine how long the replacement will last

✅ A checklist for specifying a pump from a machine serial number and a nameplate photograph

What You Are Actually Buying

Three different products are sold under the same pump name:

  1. Complete pump assembly — the full unit with regulator, ready to bolt on and connect.
  2. Rotary group / cartridge — cylinder block, pistons, valve plate, swash plate and shaft parts, for rebuilding an existing housing.
  3. Regulator or control valve only — the horsepower and flow control block on top of the pump.

Confirm which of the three you are quoting. A price that looks 60% cheaper is usually a rotary group, not an assembly.

Pump Families and Specifications

The K3V and K5V series are open-circuit swash-plate axial piston pumps used across a wide range of crawler excavators. Published figures:

Model Displacement (cm³) Rated pressure Peak pressure Max speed for self-priming (min⁻¹) Max input torque, tandem (N·m) Mass, tandem (kg)
K3V63 63 34.3 MPa 39.2 MPa 2,650 343 81
K3V112 112 34.3 MPa 39.2 MPa 2,360 588 125
K3V140 140 34.3 MPa 39.2 MPa 2,150 1,120 160
K3V280 280 34.3 MPa 39.2 MPa 1,600 1,950 270
K5V80 80 34.3 MPa 39.2 MPa 2,460 529 81
K5V140 140 34.3 MPa 39.2 MPa 2,160 843 125
K5V200 200 34.3 MPa 39.2 MPa 1,900 1,120 160

Specifications per the Kawasaki Precision Machinery K3V/K5V catalog for open-circuit pumps. The K5V series shares K3V installation dimensions and regulator options while carrying higher displacement in the same envelope.

Other families you will meet: Komatsu's HPV series (the model number denotes nominal displacement per pump, and the tandem version doubles it), and the OEM-numbered pumps fitted to Cat, Hitachi, Kobelco, Volvo and Doosan machines, where the machine maker's own part number — not the pump maker's model — is what the parts system recognises.

Reading the Model Code

A Kawasaki ordering code follows this structure:

latest company news about Excavator Hydraulic Pump Buying Guide: Models and Specs 1

K3V 112 DT H 100 R 2N 01
Field Meaning
K3V Series
112 Displacement in cm³ (63 / 112 / 140 / 280 for K3V; 80 / 140 / 200 for K5V)
DT Double pump, tandem arrangement. Alternatives: DP double parallel, S single
H With centrifugal pump (P = with PTO; blank = standard)
100 Regulator design code
R Rotation: R clockwise, L counterclockwise, viewed from the shaft end
2N Regulator code — see below
01 Design code

Two pumps can carry the same displacement and completely different behaviour because of the regulator code. That is why "K3V112DT" alone is not a specification.

Regulator Codes: Where the Behaviour Lives

The regulator combines a flow-control function with a horsepower-control function:

Flow control: M manual, P positive flow control, N negative flow control, C two-stage maximum flow, L load sensing, E electric flow control.

Horsepower control: 1 constant horsepower, 2 total horsepower, 4 / 5 high-pressure cut-off, 6 / 9 variable horsepower.

Common combinations:

  • 10 — constant horsepower
  • 20 — total horsepower
  • 60 — total horsepower with high-pressure cut-off
  • 2P — positive flow control with total horsepower
  • 2N — negative flow control with total horsepower
  • 9N — negative flow control with total horsepower and variable horsepower
  • 9L — load sensing with total horsepower and variable horsepower
  • 2C — negative flow control with total horsepower and two-stage maximum flow

Fitting a positive-flow-control pump to a machine wired for negative flow control gives you a pump that runs, but does not respond correctly to the operator's demands. Match the code, not just the displacement.

The Five Specifications That Decide Fit

latest company news about Excavator Hydraulic Pump Buying Guide: Models and Specs 2

  1. Displacement per pump and arrangement — single, tandem or parallel. A tandem pump delivers roughly twice the flow of a single at the same displacement.
  2. Rated and peak pressure — the system's relief setting must sit inside the pump's rated pressure, with peak pressure as the transient ceiling.
  3. Maximum input torque — especially on tandem units; it is the limit that protects the drive shaft and coupling.
  4. Mounting and shaft — SAE flange dimensions and the spline: tooth count, pitch circle, pressure angle and module all vary between sizes.
  5. Rotation direction — clockwise or counterclockwise viewed from the shaft end. Fitting the wrong hand destroys the pump within minutes.
Installation Limits That Decide Service Life

These come from the pump maker's own instructions and are routinely ignored:

  • Oil cleanliness to NAS 1638 Class 9, with a 10 µm return-line filter.
  • 80–150 mesh strainer on the suction line.
  • Case drain pressure must stay at or below 0.1 MPa in normal operation, 0.4 MPa at peak.
  • Coupling alignment within ±0.03 mm; no radial or thrust load on the shaft end.
  • Fill the pump case with oil before first start — a dry start is the fastest way to scrap a new pump.
  • Replace the suction strainer and return filter at the same time as the pump; a new pump on a dirty circuit fails early and looks like a quality problem.
Specifying a Pump in Five Steps

latest company news about Excavator Hydraulic Pump Buying Guide: Models and Specs 3

  1. Machine model and serial number.
  2. Photograph of the pump nameplate and of the stamped model code on the housing.
  3. Photograph of the regulator block, showing the adjusting screws and any code plate.
  4. State the arrangement: single, tandem or parallel, and the rotation direction.
  5. Ask for the flow and pressure test record of the unit offered — a bench test at rated pressure, not a "tested" claim.
New, Remanufactured or Used

A new assembly carries the longest warranty and the highest price. A remanufactured unit with a replaced rotary group and a tested regulator is the usual compromise on older machines. Used pumps are worth considering only with a pressure and flow record and a known machine history; a used pump with an unknown regulator setting can cost more in diagnosis than it saved.
