Place of Origin:
China
Brand Name:
CAT
Model Number:
3208
The 3208 is the medium-duty V8 of 10.4 litres and 636 cubic inches, built on a 114 mm bore and 127 mm stroke. It was produced in naturally aspirated, turbocharged and aftercooled forms, and published output across those builds runs from 137 hp to 435 hp — so the model name alone says nothing about what is inside the crate. This page sets the firing order, the block construction and the shared part numbers against the traps buyers keep falling into.

| Suffix Ladder | Plain 3208 is naturally aspirated, T adds a turbocharger, TA adds aftercooling, and N sometimes marks the absence of a turbo |
| Block Construction | The casting has no liner, so wear is corrected by boring oversize or by fitting an aftermarket sleeve back to standard bore |
| Numbers Shared With 3204 | Nozzle 9L6969 and piston body 7E4729 are listed against both the four cylinder 3204 and this V8 |
| Numbers Shared Further Out | Plunger 6N7527 is sold for 3208 alongside 3304 and 3306, which are different families again |
| Related Components | Cylinder head, head gasket, piston and ring set, bearing set, nozzle, sleeve metering pump, turbocharger, oil cooler, water pump, injector, governor |
Eight, in two banks of four at 90 degrees, which is why the model carries a two and why the 3208 and four cylinder 3204 are cousins rather than versions of each other. Listings calling it a six cylinder engine are wrong on the most basic fact, and a seller who is wrong there is unlikely to be right about the governor or the bell housing.
Because output is set by fuelling, aspiration and duty rather than by the casting. A naturally aspirated industrial unit in a dump truck and an aftercooled marine unit pushing a hull share the iron but not the pump, the pistons or the cooling, and the marine rating runs higher because its load is predictable. Ask for application, duty cycle and rating together.
It means the bore is the block. Nothing pulls out to be replaced, so wear is corrected either by cutting the bore oversize with matching pistons, or by machining for a dry sleeve and returning to standard size. Both work; the first limits how often the block can be saved, the second puts a sleeve in an engine that never had one. A rebuilt unit should say which route was taken.
Nozzle 9L6969 and piston body 7E4729 are the two that appear against both models.
It is an assembly reference, not a single component, so the arrangement must be confirmed.
1, 2, 7, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, running counterclockwise from the flywheel end.
